Instead of two similarly powered enemies facing off, the three distinct races in StarCraft have unique capabilities and strategies. Everyone still competes in the RTS genre's typical race for resources, but that's the only shared trait. Terrans can move their bulky mechanized bases as necessary, while the reptilian Zerg grow their colonies and warriors from mutating larvae. Meanwhile, the noble Protoss warp in equipment from their home world using psionic powers.

Not only does game maker Blizzard juggle the races' playability and match it with superb art and sound effects, it also weaves together an engrossing three-act plot. Early on, as a Terran magistrate, you spend a breathtaking 30 minutes defending against a Zerg onslaught. As the story unfolds around you, you'll experience the Zerg's hive mentality and decipher the mysterious Protoss by the game's dramatic conclusion.

Missions vary in scope and are effectively framed with dialogue, chapter screens, and in-mission exposition. Multiplayer games are also very well represented by Blizzard's own free Battle.net service. If you'd rather play over a local area network, StarCraft will generously "spawn" up to seven copies so your friends can join in.

In keeping with StarCraft's groundbreaking design, Brood War presents you with three sides of a galactic conflict. Scheming humans, insidious Zerg, and proud Protoss collide again, with stunning new cinematics setting the stage. Old friends and foes and ominous new arrivals give the story a breakneck pace, while a handful of additions to each race's arsenal makes for tense battles. Brood War also features stellar new environments and ambient art, as well as more than 100 additional multiplayer maps.

Some missions require a bit of finesse, breaking the resource-gathering routine while making good use of the new units. Humans now have Valkyrie missile frigates as well as medics who automatically try to heal your grunts. New for the Zerg air force is the acid-spewing Devourer; the new Lurker unit provides heavy-duty (under)ground support. Along with the Corsair fighter, the Protoss reenter the fray with Dark Templar, which can merge to form the devastating Dark Archon. Unfortunately, units old and new still suffer from weak artificial intelligence in path finding.

The best game of its time, now a classic (2009-04-10)
When reviewing this product, I must put it into perspective for the time of my review. Starcraft came out in 1998, some 11 years ago now. When it was released, it was a huge hit and won PC game of the year. Now that computers are much faster and graphics have improved, the game can seem a bit out dated to players who have never played it before. For us gamers who remember it from the glory days, we can play it again and still enjoy it, but if your looking for a new game to try, this might be the wrong one for you. Having said that, Korea still has T.V. channels devoted to this game and it is still widely played there.

Starcraft is a futuristic real-time strategy game (that means that you are looking down on units that are under your control). There are three races: Protoss are super-advanced aliens that use incredible technologies and strange energies. Zerg are a primitive dinosaur-like species that use beasts and fleshy creatures. Terran are the human race of the future using technology to aid our fighters in battle. The three races are well balanced and very unique, giving the game excellent replay ability. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

sheer pleasure (2009-04-05)
this is the fourth time i have bought this product...
between my grandson and three other computers...
i have been playing this game since it came out..
i am waiting for the new starcraft 2 to come out..
and it looks like it's going to be better... but this one i have enjoyed for many year along with other players online for along time...

Don't bother if you have a widescreen monitor or laptop. (2009-01-20)
I'm not saying Starcraft is a bad game- but Blizzard has repackaged and resold this title to run on new PC's, but they fail to tell you that game only runs on a small resolution that cannot be changed, and that there is no way to run it in a window mode without using hacks that will not work with the "new" version of the game. This means that if you use a widescreen monitor or a laptop, the graphics are distorted and nasty looking, to a point where I couldn't play it. Shame on blizzard for not adding windowed mode in the latest patches- people have been trying to hack in this feature for years and the request seems to fall on deaf ears. If they don't support the game, they should stop selling it too.

One of the best games ever made! (2008-12-06)
This game is without a doubt one of the best games ever made, and what a DEAL at 19.99 for the whole set! This game's single player is very enjoyable, and you'll also enjoy countless hours of free online play (provided you have a decent internet connection).

Blizzard's free online gaming service is fantastic. Simple and easy to use, and it has everything from competitive 1vs1ing as well as team games of sizes anywhere from 2vs2 to 4vs4, massive 8-way free for alls and more! I really enjoy playing this online with my friends.

If you like real time strategy games, this is a must have. I'd also like to say that of all the games I've played so far by this company, I've never been disappointed. They're all high quality in my opinion, and Starcraft is certainly no exception.

Still one of the best RTS games ever made. (2008-12-01)
Trying to find a game that will run flawlessly on your netbook but still immensely fun? This is that game. Not only fun single player action, but fun online too. Starcraft also has an amazing storyline to it as well.

The Truth about Spore (2009-04-22)
There have been far too many complaints about this game for me to ignore writing a review about it. Spore is, quite simply, one of the most perfect games every constructed. If you have ever in your life thought to yourself any of the following: "Biology is kinda cool," "Fighting aliens is great," or "I really like playing god," then Spore is the game for you.

As anyone can see by looking up the gameplay footage, Spore has many phases at the players disposal. You start as a single cell, evolve into an animal phase, become a semi-sentient species, build a civilization, and then go into space. All of these phases offer a unique style of gameplay. But I'll be honest, when push comes to shove, Spore is all about space.

Once you get into the space phase, it feels as if everything you've done was just a small stepping stone to the mind-bogglingly-large galaxy that Spore has to offer. With countless thousands of stars, almost all with several planets orbiting them, the amount of exploration that the game offers is simply amazing.

Spore is one of the very few games that I simply must say has almost no flaws. It can be played by almost anyone at any age and enjoyed for what it is: a game that helps slap counter-evolutionists in the face.

Cool! A Book and a Poster AND a Making-of DVD! (2009-04-20)
It's Spore. The game is quite fun, as it ranges from a crappy flash game to a awesome third person game to a not-awesome-but-fun RTS game. This edition was the same price as the standard edition (at best buy anyway), so I got it. It comes in a cool plastic "textured" (ooh), and has a poster, making of DVD, and a hardback art book!!!! SuckyouRom hasn't been an issue...yet. If you want a more detailed, every nick and cranny review, search for a review on standard spore.

My son loves this game! (2009-04-13)
This is a great game and I'm happy that after several months I finally decided to ignore the negative reviews and buy it.

Installing it was easy, but when we first try to start the game nothing happened. I searched the internet for information and tried the advice I found there--remove the disk from the drive and click on the desktop shortcut. For the first two or three minutes it didn't seem like anything was happening, but then the game loaded and my 12-year-old son has played it for more hours than I'm willing to admit. We tried exiting and starting it back up and it still takes perhaps a minute or so but then things are fine.

I understand that many people are angry about the Digital Rights Management (DRM) issues and I don't want to comment on that. I will comment that this is a great game and I'm happy that I finally purchased it.

Fantastic Game (2009-03-20)
While I understand the annoyance of the DRM-complaints, the game itself is a separate topic, and should not be detracted from. This is one of the coolest games I have ever seen or played. I purchased it for my seven-year old right when it came out. My son is very interested in evolution, science, computers and critters. He loves it and has had many happy hours playing Spore, both alone and with friends taking turns creating and running each other's creations. I feel it has taught him valuable lessons about getting along with others (making allies, standing up to bullies, working as a team, etc) that he has turned around into real-world behaviors, and it has been exciting to watch him express his creativity in his Spore creations. Spore is very VERY well done, and I think it was worth every penny - I'm very glad I bought it and look forward to the Galactic Adventures expansion pack coming out.

In addition to how much we've enjoyed the game, I enjoyed watching the DVDs in the Galactic Edition - National Geographic always does a great job with their DVDs, and this is no exception.

Honestly, I don't care about the DRM. (2009-03-15)
I really don't need to install this game three times. So seeing all the 1 star reviews with people that haven't played it kinda makes me mad. This game is great, it's a long game, and you can just mess around the with creature creator if you want. It is the most customizable game I've ever played, and if you like customizing [anything] play this game.
