Once you have had your baby eventually you will feel that you want to lose your baby belly, an avoidable part of being pregnant. When you can only fit in your maternity wear it can be a little depressing, but just be patient. With a little time, some exercise and a healthy diet, you will lose your baby belly. Your body might not return completely to its pre-pregnant shape, but you can improve your figure.
Exercise
It can be difficult in the first few weeks to even think about exercise, and you really shouldn't anyway. If you have had a normal birth you should wait at least four weeks before you start doing any form of exercise. If you have a caesarean it is recommended you wait six weeks. You will have post natal check ups so talk to your doctor about when they think you are ready. You will also be feeling extremely tired and overwhelmed so don't rush into it. It is, however, good for you to get back into exercising as it will make you feel better. Start by going for gentle walks with the baby in the pram. Don't rush it or try to go too hard.
Breastfeed
Breastfeeding actually burns between six hundred to eight hundred calories a day so you may find that you are losing weight through breastfeeding alone. Your calorie intake increases during this time as you need around an extra five hundred a day. Once your baby starts on solids or you stop breastfeeding watch that you don't start to put extra weight on. Adjust your calorie intake accordingly.
Weights
To speed up your metabolism you can lift weights. Don't start with weights that are too heavy. If you don't own any or can't afford to go to the gym you can try lifting soup cans or even bottles of soft drink. Getting some professional advice to start with can help, so you might want to hire a personal trainer for a few sessions to get you on the right track.
Diet
You do need to have a higher intake of calories when you are breastfeeding, but make sure that you are consuming the right types of food. Watch that you don't eat too much sugar and watch that you don't snack too often on the wrong types of foods. Go for low fat milk and yoghurt, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and plenty of high fibre foods.
Sleep
Often we tend to put sleep way down the order of things that are important. As well as being over tired through lack of sleep it can also lead to becoming unwell if you don't get enough rest. It can help with weight loss because you don't feel the need to eat sugary foods for energy. Try to sleep every time your baby does and forget about things like the housework. In the early weeks it is not important. You need to stay healthy so you can look after your baby properly. With the unsettled nights and the change in your sleep pattern you need to look after yourself and get enough rest.
